I was looking into IT/Cyber Security games and found this article listing six cyber security lessons in the form of games. I started off with Targeted Attack: The Game from Trend Micro.
The format is straight forward, you play as the CIO of Fugle. You are provided a small budget of six Trend Micro dots. Haha. You are facilitating the launch of what seems to be a contact-less payment app or something (I’ve already forgotten) as part of an already functioning financial system. You are presented with a query as to the security of the upcoming app release. You are given a few options to progress; outsource the audit to a third party; postpone the launch and do it yourself; or do an EA and release a broken mess with post-launch patches. And so the game goes forth like this, with some options requiring more TM$ than others. Using all your coins early may result in you missing appropriate options later on. I’m not going to ruin the joy for those who haven’t played it. Also, CBF.
Now, on my first play through, I treated it as if it was me making the decisions, limited experience and all. So I ran out of money pretty quick. Turns out, my solution to the problem was either overkill, or just poorly advised. Top tip, if you feel the solution to an ongoing intrusion is to just turn off all the things, bear in mind you will be destroying evidence and ultimately helping the bad guys cover their tracks.
It looks like I won’t be a CIO anytime soon.
